Addiction
"The true cause of all addictions is anxiety... an uneasy feeling that is temporarily masked or tranquillised, by some substance or behaviour". This also applies to food. Unfortunately for people who have chosen food as their substance of choice this is a harder behaviour to change because we need to eat food everyday, this means that you can trigger your addiction much more easily than other substances.
Addicted people really want to be free of their addiction but despite their good intentions they usually revert to their former behaviour. Even when someone kicks one addiction they normally pick up another in its place ie. people who give up cigarettes substitute them for food. The addiction has not been overcome but has merely shifted. The reason for this is that most people do not address the true cause of their addiction. If they did they would not need to substitute one addiction for another. What is not an addiction?

Take away an addicts substance and they will become anxious. A habit can be changed without anxiety. Most people seek out their favourite substance (alcohol, cigarettes etc) to tranquillise their anxiety. They do this in an effort to relax, calm their nerves, take their minds off things. These are all different forms of anxiety. Addictive behaviour is not simply a bad habit but an anxiety which is driving a person towards an addictive substance or behaviour. This is only a temporary release. When the effects wear off the anxiety surfaces once again and an addict must repeat the cycle. All addicts know that their behaviour is heading them in the wrong direction. Many try to overcome it and often slip back into previous behaviour and this is because of Psychological Reversal (see article on home page). EFT works on psychological reversal, dramatically reduces the pain of withdrawal and often eliminates it entirely.
Phobia's,Fears or Anxiety
A phobia is a fear, horror or aversion of an object, animal or place. Our fears are essential to a point. They are important for our survival. Without them we might walk off the tops of tall buildings, run in front of moving cars etc.. They are an automatic mechanisms that kick into place when danger is afoot. Sometimes fears overdo their function and create an unnecessary fear response. It is one thing to be cautious, some things can be dangerous and cause you harm. It is quite another to experience a pounding heart, headache, nausea, vomiting, sweating, or tears. This is excess fear and is above and beyond normal caution. EFT eliminates the phobic part of the fear but leaves the normal caution or concern alone. People are often amazed at how quickly a lifelong phobia can vanish. But the process does not make them stupid. They don't suddenly jump off of tall buildings because they have been cured of their fear of heights. EFT can treat that phobia quickly, effectively and painlessly. Normally in about 2 hours.
You have probably heard of the more commonly known phobias such as claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces), arachnophobia (fear of spiders), aqua phobia (fear of water). There is a phobia for most things that we come across in our modern lives. Today people suffer from fear of flying, fear of public speaking, fear of dogs the list is endless.
If you suffer from a phobia you will have probably discovered that a fear that started as something small has escalated over the years and has become quite a significant problem. Phobias never go away but continue to get stronger over the years and until in some cases they take over a person's life. You may control your phobia quite well but every time you encounter an event that triggers your phobia, it will grow stronger and stronger until you address the problem. A phobia may affect your work life and personal life.
Maybe you work for a company and you have to make presentations in board meetings or you need to make a speech at a wedding? Then being able to speak in front of people in a clear and confident manner is very important, but many people find that they are unable to do this? hindering their career - this is a fear of public speaking. Maybe you are going on holiday and you would love to go abroad but you just can not get on that plane?- then you have a fear of flying. All these things can be treated giving you back control of your life.
Phobia's are normally made up of a serious of traumatic events and some can be make up of more than one phobia - for instance fear or flying may also be a fear on enclosed spaces and a fear of dying etc. Phobia's and trauma's are very closely related and you may find the section on trauma of interest to you.
